Jacklex 35 years on - New Pancho Villa Range

Peter Johnstone of Spencer Smith Miniatures has been in touch with news of interest to all who love Jacklex figures and were tantalised by the pictures of Jack Alexander's Pancho Villa figures.

Dear 'Old metal detector',

Following earlier postings on this blog regarding Jack Alexander's new range of 'Pancho Villa'(1917) war figures or the American Punitive expedition into Mexico, I am pleased to say that the infantry and cavalry figures are now ready for sale and I am pleased to attached a list of available figures. The artillery pieces: erhardt gun, French 75mm gun, motor cyclist and a US colt machine gun plus limbers will be due very shortly. Jack points out that the Japanese WW1 infantry double nicely as the Mexican regular army figures and the Boer war range of mounted figures are useful extra figures for the American cavalry. Pictures should be up on our website very soon, but you already have some very nice pictures on your blog. Hope you can make mention of this new range. A bit unique, I think. How many soldier makers leave it 35 years before bringing out new figures? I will let you know when I have the rest of the range.

Please ask your members to contact me directly for further information or to place orders via phone/post or website in the usual way.

Peter's Spencer Smith Miniatures web site can be found here

Jack Alexander - more Mexican/Americans

Earlier I posted some pictures from Alan of these wonderful figures made by Jack Alexander for his own wargaming use. This missing photograph completes the set. The firing cavalry are from the Jacklex Boer colonial range, some with added sombreros. There is a new horse pose and Jack msade a Hotchkiss machine gun for the MG crew on the bank in the bottom right hand corner. He also scratchbuilt the bridge and buildings.

Jacklex

I have been in a bit of a quandary about what to do about Jacklex on this blog. I love these figures, particularly the Colonial and Russo Japanese War ranges. I used to gaze longingly at the Harrow Model Shop adverts, in the days when I had no money for metal figures and mail order just wasn't a realistic option. I had dreams of a siege of Mafeking campaign, and a North West Frontier set up involving an invading Russian army.

My rule of thumb is that I will post information on out of production figures, and if they are still in production I shouldn't be doing the manufacturer's advertising for them. The complete Jacklex ranges (American Civil War, Colonial, Russo Japanese War, Workd War 1) are available from Peter Johnstone at Spencer Smith Miniatures - his excellent web site has listings and pictures of most of the figures and wonderful equipment sets here (use the Jacklex drop down menu to select the range you wish to view).

My dilemma has been solved by receiving some pictures of figures Jack Alexander has produced for his own gaming (please note these are a private project and are not commercially available). These Mexican/American figures are characteristic of Jacklex style and poses, and are simply brilliant.

I have also received pictures of various ships - Colonial gunboat and steam launch, South Sea Junks, Samurai castle, and ACW Colonial House- which can be viewed over on the Vintage Wargaming blog. It's fantastic to see the quality of the modelling - the pictures are inspirational.

Correction - Miltra

Jack Alexander has let me know that there were two others involved involved in the design of the Miltra range as well as Bish and himself, Barry Warby of MMS and the late Lyn Heywood.

Miltra

Bish Iwaszko was a leading light of the London Wargames Section, and a military modeller of similar standing to John Sandars. In 1979 he made a range of metal figures available through his firm Miltra - Military Training Aids. The company is still in existence, providing among other things replica ordnance and 1/12 scale bridging equipment for military training, although the figure range has changed hands a number of times. The figures were originally designed for museum use, by Jack Alexander of Jacklex fame. The figures were unusual in a number of ways; they tended to be in casual (standing around) poses rather than combat ones - this reflected their original purpose as museum diorama accessories; they often had separate weapons; and represented some subjects which at the time were impossible to obtain elsewhere, like Polish 1939 and French and Belgian 1940 troops.

They differed from their contemporaries in another way, being 1/72nd scale. There were some exotic figures, including Polish cavalry, and some even more exotic equipment, such as a TKS tankette and more gloriously a Cavalry Taczanka with 3 horses, 3 crew, and a Browning MG.

BW Models took on the range from Miltra, and later they passed on to Trux. I am not sure whether these figures are currently available and if so from where - any information on this would be gratefully received. The listings I have used have been taken from a Trux catalogue, I think from the 90s.

The review from Wargamer's Newsletter of the original release (British Airborne Forces) is reproduced below. I am also posting a series of articles by Bish Iwasko from Miniature Warfare, called Invasion WW11, over on Vintage Wargaming. These are profusely illustrated with photos of interesting models.
