More Medieval and Roman siege artillery

Last week I ventured into my loft for the first time in about eighteen months.

I have recently acquired a number of Rose and Hinton Hunt ACW units and I needed to see what I already had, and put them into the best combinations as units.

I also knew I had a small number of additional painted Rose Napoleonic units which would just need rebasing to my new Rose standard.

Then I had my RJW project, where I needed to find again the ones in the loft I already had painted. Figures are mostly Jacklex with some Stonewall ones thrown in. The bad news was having fairly recently finally tracked down the Stonewall figures on their website (not easy, I promise you) and having taken an inordinate time to paint the 60 or so Japanese infantry I had in the queue ... I found I hd another 60 or so of the blighters undercoated in the loft. So more work on them, then...Still it puts forward the evil day when I have to try to put together the handrails on the two new Japanese field guns I bought a while ago from Mark at Jacklex.

But a collateral benefit was this group of medieval and Roman artillery pieces. I think that is now the ninth Lamming medieval ballista I've found I had, together with some type of mini trebuchet and two Roman scorpios. I've no idea who made these last three items - the scorpios are definitely right bu the "trebuchet" has been assembled from a box of bits including some other frames and a catapult arm. These will all have been odd bits which were included with something else I bought and which I had wanted at the time.

Glad to have (re) discovered them now - I had no idea they were there.

Next post will be the Rose Napoleonics - more of the same as in previous posts, but only one more Old Guard battalion which means the ration of line to Guard has improved a bit.

Then I will do some posts on the Rose and other ACW units once I have done the photographs.

And eventually something about some Hinchliffe System 12 figures and accessories which I have recently acquired -- though that might be on Vintage Wargaming.

So all in all I'm hoping to increase tyhe productivity of my logs a bit in the near future, Good intentions, eh?

GHQ Guardsmen

I have posted this listing from the Walthers catalogue before and I am now indebted to Bob D from the States for sending me the following pictures of the sets of figures he has. The first five pictures show how the figures came in their boxes.

The remaining pictures show individual figures:

French infantry, showing separate heads and assembled:

French infantryman (firing) and Line Chasseur a Cheval:

Cavalry figure in three parts, showing the distinctive design and assembly:

And finally the underside of the bases, showing the stylised "G" marking.

There is also a photo of two boxes of ACW infantry:

I have some packs (Prussian Fusiliers, Grenadiers and Dragoons) of the GHQ Guardsmen 25mm SYW figures manufactured in the UK by New Hope Design. These were sold in small plastic bags with card headers, and separate compartments for bodies, heads and muskets.

I may post some pictures of these later if there is any interest.

Douglas Miniatures Crimeans, Napoleonics and Wodensfeld ACW ranges - availability

The arrival of the Brunswick figures featured in the previous post reminded me that I had a couple of samples of Douglas Napoleonics from John Cunningham, who holds the rights to these ranges. John is about to release the Crimean War range, and has limited stocks of part of the Napoleonic range (some of the moulds have been lost). John also has the ex-Wodensfeld ACW slowly starting production - Louisiana Tigers and Rebs marching as well as few mounted generals & officers are currently available in limited numbers.

The first two pictures are of NP 7, British Line Infantry Advancing

The next two are NP 23 French Line Voltigeur/Grenadier in shako firing

John tells me limited stock of the following figures are available:

NP10 British Line Infantry standard bearer
NP 9 British Line Infantry officer
NP 7 British Line Infantry at ready
NP 7a British Line Infantry at ready, variant with musket sling
NP 22 French Grenadier of Guard firing
NP 23 French Line Voltigeur/grenadier in shako firing

and further figures to come:

NP 6 Brunswick Infantry
NP 8 British Line Infantry firing
NP 19 French Guard officer
NP 21 & 21a British Hussar and horse

Rose American Civil War range

A small group of eight foot figures, four mounted, and artillery piece and limber.

Rose figures can be recognised through the animation of the figures (poses) and the small thickish oblong bases. Colour bearers (as for their Napoleonic range) have small, cast flags.

Thomas Industries ACW artillery and equipment

Thomas Industries ACW horse teams

Thomas Industries American Civil War range

Thomas Industries produced some of the earliest 20mm wargame figures in the United States, in 1953. These very small 20mm models are still available and have been produced since at least 1973 by K&L Company. They have no web presence so I feel it is appropriate to present them here. I am expecting a paper catalogue (thanks Don) and will look to post additional information when i have it.

In the meantime, i can post pictures of some infantry figures, some horse teams and the exquisite equipment models - guns, limbers, caissons and wagon.

Alberken ACWC1 Union Cavalry in Kepi

The first figure on the Old Metal Detector blog is this Alberken one piece casting of a charging Union cavalryman. The entire Alberken ACW range was of two cavalry figures, one per side. This was expanded in the Minifigs 20mm range to include a futher mounted figure and ten foot figures.
