Warrior ECW listing

This is the listing of the (old) Warrior ECW range from a catalogue dated May 1973. I have had the scans for quite some time so I must have forgotten to post them earlier.

I also have some photos from anebay auction.

The figures were very flashy and I suspected they might be recasts rather than original figures, so was able to resist the temptation to bid.

They do, however, illustrate some of the range quite well.

Discovery: Les Higgins Subscription Figures

In an earlier post I mentioned the earlier Les Higgins ECW figures which were available on subscription. From Richard via John C of 20mm Nostalgic Reveival I have received this image of a letter from Les Higgins which accompanied the fulfiilment of an order for these figures. It may not be a complete list (the order may not have included examples of all the figures available) but it is the first time I have seen anything approaching a list for these figures, so I thought it would be useful to post it here and also on Vintage Wargaming.

In case the photo is hard to decipher (it is not a scan) here is the list:

English Civil War

Royalist

King Charles I with cloak
Royalist fencing (with cloak)
Royalist fencing
Cavalier standing
Cavalier for horse

Parliamentarian

Oliver Cromwell
Walking Roundhead
Roundhead fencing in low position
Roundhead fencing standing

Universal figures

Running musketeer
Musketeer shooting
Officer doffing hat
Pikeman standing
Pikeman receiving
Pikeman at push
Musketeer, gun on shoulder
Running figure
Trooper for horse

Other Periods

Guthram 878 AD with cloak
Grenadier 1742
Queens Cameron Highlander

Guthrum was a Dane who first defeated and then surrendered to King Alferd at the Battle of Chippenham in 878 AD. This figure is almost certainly the one posted last week by Harry P here on his Parum Pugna blog.

ECW Unit

Completed a couple of weeks ago but only just photographed now, this unit is made up of pikemen and officer which I am sure are Warrior, together with musketeers who are more of a mystery.

Looking at these together with the other Whitecoat regiment I posted previously, it looks like the musketeers would do better being swapped, as I am sure the previous lot's musketeers are also Warrior, while the new unit's musketeers' bases look very similar to the more sketchy pikemen of the first unit.

I've tried them in a couple of different configurations - I don't now if anyone would like to say which they feel sit better together, or perhaps even could identify the manufacturer(s) of the mystery pikemen and musketeers.

Here are the (presumed) Warrior figures together

Mystery ECW figures

Maybe not as much a mystery as why I don't seem to have posted anything here since October last year - not intentional, just Vintage Wargaming is taking up most of my blogging time I guess.

Inspired by Tony's new ECW project over at Prometheus in Aspic I rummaged through my assorted ECW oddments a while ago to put together a unit and this is the result - after painting they waited a long time for me to decide on a basing convention for them. No command figures as yet.

The pikemen are not I think the same manufacturer as the musketeers. i suspect some of them may be Warrior, but I am not sure. Any clarification gratefully received.

English Civil War

Over on the Vintage Wargaming blog I've posted up a series of 6 articles on the English Civil War, by George Gush and from Miniature Warfare magazine in 1970. These articles are well illustrated with photographs of Miniature Figurines 20mm English Civil War figures - if this is one of your periods you might like to take a look.

Les Higgins 20mm English Civil War Period EP1 Officers

The catalogue shows four figures in this set, as here. The officer on the left, with cloak, is the one figure currently missing from the range. If anyone has a clean original casting of this figure from which the current owners of the range can create a new mould or master, I would be very pleased to hear from you.

It has always been my belief that the middle figure in the photograph (2nd from right in the catalogue) represents King Charles 1st, given his dress, pose, and short stature (even in 20mm)

This figure is marked England, Les Higgins on the base, although in block capitals rather than script. The figure's base is rectangular, rather than the normal oval shape. I am not sure whether this is a genuine Les Higgins figure or a copy or fake; but I am including it for interest.

(Harry Pearson has let me know this is opne of the original drop cast ECW figures produced on subscription by les Higgins, before he redesigned the range for centrifugal casting)
